In the heart of Nairobi’s slums, children face overwhelming odds—poverty, unsafe environments, and a lack of access to basic needs like clean water, shelter, healthcare, and, most critically, education.
While education in Kenya is often perceived as free or low-cost, the reality is far different. Costs—such as tuition, uniforms, books, exam fees—place schooling out of reach for many families living in poverty. In the slums, parents are often forced to make an impossible choice: send a child to school or put food on the table.
Through The Soma Project Initiative, TaaBasamu is working to change this. Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty by giving vulnerable children access to quality education—opening the door to opportunity, dignity, and a future filled with possibility.
Importantly, children enrolled in our program are guaranteed at least one nutritious meal per day. For many, this is the only reliable meal they’ll receive—making school not just a place of learning, but a sanctuary of safety, nourishment, and hope.
Without this support, many children are unable to complete even primary or secondary school. This lack of access leaves them exposed to early child marriage, teenage pregnancy, HIV, and gender-based violence—the "triple threat" facing adolescents in these marginalized communities.
Education is not just a right—it’s a lifeline. It gives children the tools to rise above their circumstances, make empowered decisions, and dream beyond the limitations imposed by poverty.
Your support can help us ensure that no child has to choose between a meal and a future. Together, we can unlock their potential—one classroom, one child, one life at a time.
