Kenya team: Addy Muraguri, Founder
Moses Mafumbo
TaaBasamu—which means “smile” in Swahili—was born in 2023 when visionary Addy Muraguri shared a dream with a small group of friends: to bring hope, dignity, and opportunity to children and families in Kenya’s most vulnerable community. Together, they quickly began laying the foundation for what is now a registered non-profit organization in Kenya.
In a short time, TaaBasamu has made a meaningful impact—sponsoring a student in school, distributing school supplies, and organizing food and clothing drives for families in need. However, while the passion is strong and the need is great, the organization’s resources have been limited, with most connections and support based locally in Kenya.
To bridge this gap, Friends of TaaBasamu was established in March 2025—a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit designed to expand the reach and sustainability of the mission. With global connections and the ability to receive tax-deductible donations, Friends of TaaBasamu exists to fuel the vision, enabling more children to access education, more families to receive vital support, and more individuals around the world to engage in meaningful change.
Together, we can turn sustainable ideas into action—and bring more smiles to those who need them most.
At the heart of our mission is a simple yet powerful goal: to empower vulnerable children by opening doors to opportunity.
Based in the Kibera slum, our charity is committed to making a lasting impact in one of the most underserved communities in Kenya. Over time, we’ve launched several grassroots initiatives that bring both relief and joy to children and families—including clothing drives, food distributions, community slum tours, and sports and recreational activities.
One of our most meaningful achievements has been providing an educational scholarship to Patrick Ambunya, ensuring he has the chance to build a brighter future through learning.
While we’re proud of the progress we’ve made, our journey is just beginning. There are still many families in need—children who deserve a safe space, access to education, and the chance to dream beyond their current circumstances.
Our vision is to expand our impact, reaching more households and transforming more lives. To do this, we aim to grow our resources, strengthen community partnerships, and inspire greater involvement from individuals and organizations who share our passion.
With your support, we believe we can continue to grow—and create meaningful, lasting change for the children and families of Kibera.
